The proverb, legs feed the wolf, teaches us that without hard work nothing can be achieved. In these words of Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk – the heavyweight champion of the world it takes on additional meaning. Footwork is a key element in boxing, as it is what allows a fighter to control the fight: offensively and defensively. It impacts every aspect of the fight. Without good footwork, a fighter loses mobility, power, distance control and the ability to defend and attack effectively. The legs are the first to become overloaded and “worn out.” Many fighters end their careers at a relatively young age are transitioning into coaching roles, precisely because of how years of training degrades their bodies. Everyone has an expiration date. Kucharczak’s work pays tribute to the legs, on whose structure every blow taken and every micro-trauma has been etched. A skilled eye can spot small carved laurel wreaths in their structure, symbols of Olympic glory. Despite the fact that the bodies of the fistfighters are treated to a variety of reductions: from weight reduction to drastic treatments by prevented clinic’s breaking their noses etc.
